Update: Arkadelphia Mayor Chuck Hollingshead has called for a public hearing on Sept. 20, 2007 to allow the public to speak on an ordinance restricting ownership of “pit bulls.”

“…Arkadelphia’s City Board of Directors will discuss an ordinance that would restrict the owners of pit bull dogs in the city. The ordinance does not ban pit bulls, but does “restrict the keeping of the animal so that the likelihood of attacks is significantly reduced,” stated city Manager Jimmy Bolt in a memo to the board members.
If approved, the ordinance would require the owner of a pit bull to: Be at least 21 years of age; be covered by a $100,000 insurance policy; have the dog implanted with an identification chip by a veterinarian; have the dog spayed or neutered; have an enclosed pen, with a top and bottom; have the dog muzzled when out on a leash; post the residence and enclosure with a sign warning of a dangerous animal; and have the dog registered with the city through a veterinarian.”

Please contact the Board of Directors at the contact info below and politely inform them that breed-specific legislation in any form is ineffective and unenforceable. An enforced leash law and a non-breed-specific dog law are more than adequate to police irresponsible dog owners of any breed.

I have a five year old pit bull. I am appalled by the ignorance of what constitutes a dangerous dog, being a pit bull or breed thereof. In ordinance No. 0-06-04 is an “ordinance providing for the control of dangerous dogs within the City of Arkadelphia and providing for procedures for the control of dangerous dogs:” Section 2/Definitions 1. “A dog’s breed shall not be considered in determinging whether or not it is “dangerous.”” This was approved by C.T. Hollingshead,Mayor and Attested by Rendi Currey, City Clerk.
