Spokane, Washington May Consider Breed-Specific Mandatory Spay/Neuter Ordinance for “Pit Bulls”

“When three dogs attacked Nancy Sonduck in her fenced North Spokane yard, all she had to defend herself and her two dogs was a plastic gardening bucket.

…Five people, including Sonduck, testified at Monday’s Spokane City Council meeting about problems they’ve faced with pit bulls. Council President Joe Shogan promised that the council would explore the issue.

Gail Mackie, executive director of SpokAnimal, said a breed-specific ordinance is discriminatory and likely not legal. ‘Speaking as far as potentially dangerous dog incidents are concerned, we have all breeds,’ Mackie said. ‘I did one today that was a Pomeranian.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Little Rock, Arkansas Considers Ordinance Restricting “Pit Bulls”

“Little Rock officials hope to regulate pit bulls and classify them as a dangerous breed…

…Under the proposed ordinance, Little Rock residents still will be allowed to have pit bulls, and new residents can move with their dogs into the city after the ordinance passes. But they will have to register them with Animal Services, pose for a photograph with the dog, sterilize the animal and pay an additional fee to have a dangerous breed permit. Knox County, Tennessee Considers Breed-Specific Licensure and Mandatory Spay/Neuter

“When Frankie Byrne heard a woman had been killed by two pit bulls at a Sam Lee Road trailer, she knew exactly which animals were involved.

The Knox County animal control officer got acquainted with Mafia Lee and Passion Maria on Aug. 28 after deputies in the area encountered the dogs ‘running loose and … chasing a trash collector,’ then attacking the bumper of a patrol car that blocked their pursuit.

‘I knew that something bad was going to happen with those dogs when the sheriff’s deputies were telling me the story,’ said Byrne, who filled out “dangerous dog” paperwork but said she wants tougher laws addressing problem animals. Read the rest of this entry »

San Fran Suit Against Bully Mandatory Spay/Neuter Thrown Out

According to the San Francisco Chronicle,

A federal judge has dismissed most of a lawsuit challenging San Francisco’s ordinance that requires sterilization of pit bulls, but kept alive a claim on behalf of disabled people who need the dogs to help them get around.”

The viable part of the lawsuit that alleged that San Francisco’s mandatory “pitbull” spay/neuter ordinance violated the Americans With Disabilities Act for those who have bully service dogs was later also dismissed.
